THE STORY OF COLTS CHOCOLATE
Colts Chocolate first opened its doors in Nashville in 1984, after the owner Mackenzie Colt was exhausted from the music industry’s ups and downs. Prior to her profession in candy making, Mackenzie was a brilliant performer and was on the popular TV show, Hee Haw. She was popular amongst her peers for her delicious treats so she set out for what would be an incredible journey as a businesswoman. With her entrepreneur spirit, she knocked on doors and eventually got the attention of Honey Baked Ham whose business really gave her the confidence to keep going. She has gone from using a Kitchen-Aid mixer and a regular oven in her home to now almost 35 years later having a team of people using industrial machinery creating hundreds of products every day. Her personality captivated people, so combined with a great product, Mackenzie started a legacy within the city of Nashville.
Colts has landed partnerships with big companies such as Target, Crate and Barrel, and Christie Cookies. They have shipped their products to huge celebrities including Adam Sandler, Priscilla Presley, Joan Rivers, Ethel Kennedy, and even President and Mrs. Bush. Marketing has been a huge factor in their success which today includes efforts in radio and social media advertisement. President Kate Blocher says that “the intentional marketing they’ve done with local radio such as the Bobby Bones show, as well as consistency with their social media has really helped grow the retail and corporate gifting sides of the business.
You can find their retail shop in the popular Gulch area of Nashville, which is where Colts Chocolate has been since around 1990 and was previously a train yard. President Ficher says “We love being a part of ‘old Nashville’ because everybody wants to be a part of something authentically rooted in Nashville’s history. With tourism on the rise, it gives us the chance to be a part of a larger story.”
